THL: Why should you try it?
What a great rye. With enough vanilla, it still packs the rye punch. If you consider yourself a bourbon drinker, rye whiskey will expose you to a different dimension. Rye whiskey was the original base spirit in the Manhattan cocktail before Prohibition, and they’re still perfect partners today. Bigger flavors, all around, with this good, clean rye whiskey. If you dig Old Overholt or Wild Turkey 80, this is a step up. Don’t be afraid if you feel yourself sliding back in time to the early 20th century.
THL: Who makes it?
Buffalo Trace is owned by the Sazerac Company and distilled by Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley.
THL: What does it taste like?
cinnamon, citrus, flowers, vanilla
THL: How should you drink it?
Make the cocktail for which this rye is made after: a Sazerac. The official cocktail of New Orleans, it combines Sazerac rye, Peychaud’s Bitters, simple syrup, and a bit of absinthe. Finish with a lemon twist (I prefer to discard mine), and you have yourself a righteous cocktail. Otherwise, make yourself a delicious Manhattan.
