THL: What is it?

Rhum J. M is a white rum that is produced in the Macouba region of Martinique and made with 100% single-domain sugarcane.

THL: Why should you try it?

Rhum J.M has been produced in Martinique since 1845 at the base of an active volcano. The rich volcanic soil, on the slopes of Mt. Pelee are one of the best locations in the world to grown sugarcane. The unique terroir is largely credited for the quality of the rum, and the land is an origin respected along the lines of Cognac and Champagne. As Gustave Crassous de Medeuil like to say, “J.M Rhums are grown — not manufactured.”

THL: Who makes it?

The distillery was first started by the Crassous de Medeuil family, and remains a family-run business four generations later. They also produce Rhum Agricole Paille, Rhum Agricole Millesime, Rhum Agricole VSOP, and Sirop de Canne.

THL: What does it taste like?

Vanilla, figs, pineapple, banana, black pepper

THL: How should you drink it?

This hooch needs little more than a dash of citrus. Cut a slice of lime length-wise, just thick enough to include some of the lime flesh. Pour 2-3 ounces of Rhum Agricole into an old-fashioned glass with a few ice cubes. Squeeze the lime slice over the drink, and drop into the cocktail.
