THL: What is it?
Ragged Mountain Rum is produced in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts in a pot still and aged in used American oak bourbon barrels.
THL: Why should you try it?
Ragged Mountain Rum is the first rum offering from Berkshire Mountain Distillers. Berkshire Mountain Distillers are a small craft distillery that put an incredible amount of thought into each one of their spirits. They also believe in using local ingredients when possible, and cut their spirits with the crystal clear spring waters on their farm property. Ragged Mountain was designed to be a sipping rum (rare for US rums), and a cross between traditional a heavy Jamaican rum and a lighter style Spanish rum. They begin with a high grade blackstrap molasses and triple-distill their rum, before it’s aged in used Woodford Bourbon casks. The final rum is a blend of rums that have been aged for between two and three years. It feels good to support small local business, and even better when the hooch is so damn good.
THL: Who makes it?
Ragged Mountain Rum is produced by Berkshire Mountain Distillers in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. They also produce Ethereal Gin, Greylock Gin, Ice Glen Vodka, Berkshire Bourbon, and New England Corn Whiskey.
THL: What does it taste like?
toasted almonds, cinnamon, caramel, toffee
THL: How should you drink it?
While you can certainly mix this rum in any cocktail calling for a gold rum, it was designed for sipping and the chance to sample a domestic sipping rum is a rare thing indeed, so we would be remiss to not recommend drinking neat, and also with an ice cube or two to see how the flavors evolve.
