THL: What is it?
El Tesoro Tequila Platinum is produced with agave grown in the highlands of Arandas in Jalisco, Mexico.
THL: Why should you try it?
El Tesoro means “the treasure” and the liquid that lies inside this bottle is a prize worth pursuing. The highlands of Arandas are home to some of the best agave grown in Mexico, as the elevation creates perfect conditions for growing the sweetest agave plants. The heart of the agave plant is called a piña, and these hearts need to be prepared before they are baked. El Tesoro does not use industrial machinery to prepare the piñas, but instead rely on the skill and sharp axes of the workers to make the perfect cut as the waxy stems can give the tequila a bitter flavor. A one-ton stone wheel is then turned by tractor to extract the juice from the piñas after they have been cooked and cooled. Unlike many industrial-scale tequila distilleries who ferment only the piña juice, El Tesoro keeps the piñas in the fermentation vats for a stronger agave flavor.
THL: Who makes it?
El Tesoro is distilled at the La Altena Distillery, where they also produce El Tesoro Reposado and El Tesoro Añejo. They also produce the limited edition El Tesoro Paradiso and El Tesoro Aniversario, which were made in incredibly small-batches and quickly became collector’s items.
THL: What does it taste like?
Seaweed, roasted green peppers, vanilla
THL: How should you drink it?
Try this spirit neat with an ice cube or two to let the flavors evolve.
