THL: What is it?
At 125 proof, this hooch will put some hair on your chest. Buffalo Trace has made their once limited edition White Dog Mash #1 a new standard that’s sure to gain a high-proof fan following.
THL: Why should you try it?
You would think all you’d taste from a 125 proof spirit is fire. While there is some heat, the flavor and aroma of corn are dominant in the secret proprietary mash of corn, rye and malted barley. It’s really fun to see how your Buffalo Trace Bourbon starts, and also helps you to appreciate the time and thoughtfulness that the distillers put into a “finished” bourbon.
Buffalo Trace White Dog Mash #1 is what comes off of the still that goes into barrels and will eventually become Buffalo Trace Bourbon. The time spent in oak casks and the reduction in proof adds much of the smoothness in most bourbons we’ve grown to know and love, Buffalo Trace included. Un-aged whiskey is sometimes also referred to as white lighting because of the jolt that accompanies imbibing it. There is definitely some heat on this white lightning, but it is actually drinkable neat and makes for one stiff cocktail.
THL: Who makes it?
Buffalo Trace is one of America’s oldest distilleries and a model for the kind of success that follows a commitment to quality, a willingness to experiment, readiness to push boundaries, and bravery to pioneer uncharted territory.
