Bartender Stories

Alexandra Geppert

Why wouldn't there be many stories and claims on something as nourishing, exotic and historical as the Pisco Sour. According to my Peruvian bartender friend, Kenjiro Yanagui, the mystery and intrigue still exists, but it doesn't keep anyone from enjoying this prolific cocktail. He told me once of his studies in Lima on bartending and mixology. His professor was staunch in his specifications for the final exam paper: an investigation, no library and no internet. Only first person accounts of the history and lore of the national treasure. Many things were revealed in this investigation for Kenjiro, but most of all that there is a culture and community in these bars that would reveal itself through each conversation and exploration. The allegiances, the retorts. One thing remained resolute: it's a damn good cocktail.
