Bartender Stories

John Manwaring

When I started as a bartender I was more or less on my own when it came to learning cocktails. The Manhattan was by far the most controversial. “It gets bourbon!” one guest would yell. “You keep that cherry away from my drink!” chided another. “You’re supposed to shake it!” I made it my mission to find which of the myriad methods made the best Manhattan. Subtle, strong, smooth and seductive. When made correctly, a Manhattan is all of these things and more, the Cocktail of cocktails.
