New American classics for the porch, the pool deck and the park
Unless you live in one of those places where it’s too hot to see straight and every indoor space is so overblown with AC that frost forms on the windows (our condolences to any Phoenician readers), summer’s a pretty fantastic time to be alive. From quintessential backyard pool parties and BBQs to more adventurous romps through the wide-open wilderness, there’s no shortage of good old-fashioned fun in the sun to be had by all.
But what’s a great summer day without a great summer playlist? Something that ebbs Americana and flows a little bit of folk? It’s not much, we can tell you that. So here’s a little something to fill the air around your burgers, brats, green grass and good vibes. While it might not give you much in the way of nostalgia — all these songs are from the last decade or so — it might help you set the soundtrack to a few new-school memories instead.
It’s summer. Turn up the tunes, grab your favorite bevvy and kick back.
More About the Music
Starting with an early-aughts band from Brooklyn channeling the Velvet Underground and ending with a fast-rising folk pop act from Colorado, this playlist was created to take you to a host of atmospheres from around the country. But as the music swims from song to song and genre to genre, it becomes clearer — regardless of how many drinks are consumed while listening — that no matter where these American artists hail from, all our summer dreams tend to be a whole lot alike.
