Here’s a French-inspired playlist in honor of the Bloody Mary cocktail and boozy brunches with friends. We scoured music blogs for classic and current artists from different genres — electronica, nu jazz, pop, rock, R&B, chanson — to be the soundtrack for your party. They are an eclectic group, including:
Èmilie Simon. Simon composed the original soundtrack for Luc Jacquet’s documentary La Marche de l’empereur (March of the Penguins). Her music was considered too challenging for a North American audience and was replaced before the film was released in the U.S.
Hermes House Band. Their cover of Gloria Gaynor’s anthem, I Will Survive, (included in our mix) made them famous and sold over 2.5 million copies. Formed in 1984, the band is continually composed of members of the Hermes society at the University of Rotterdam. When a band member graduates, they must leave the band immediately. There are some 75 former members.
And, of course, Carla Bruni. Because no French playlist would be complete without the former first lady.
More About the Music
Parties have a groove. Most need a little push at the start to get everyone in the door and past that awkward meet and greet. Then, no matter how carefully you’ve laid out nibbles somewhere else, everyone crams into the kitchen. And that’s actually great because the whole point of brunch is to be together. At the table, over good food and drink, a sort of Paris café culture sets in, real conversations take place and for a while the world slows down.
